When Joss Whedon Was Our Master

You don’t have to look very far to find his legacy. A huge majority of science fiction and superhero movies and TV shows have dialogue that sounds like a bad imitation of Whedon’s work. The things that once made his work distinct are now bland—in part because so much of popular culture has been made in his image, and in greater part because of the limits of Whedon’s imagination.

Why Does Everything on Netflix Look Like That?

The Sandman, despite having great writing and great acting, suffers from these aspects of the Netflix look. Although the main character’s domain is the world of dreams, often in the show dramatic moments are reduced to scenes of characters talking in a medium close up. Fans of the show have also gotten frustrated by the show’s aspect ratio, which makes the frames look like they’ve been stretched upward. Tom Sturridge’s face looks especially made up as Dream—his lips are so red they’re almost distracting. Worst of all are the muddy colors, especially because the comic that The Sandman is adapting had such an exuberant color palette.

Aaron Sorkin’s Liberal Fantasy Runs the World

Truly, Sorkin and the current Democratic party have a lot in common. They recognize the problems of the world, but don’t want to dismantle the systems that give rise to them; they’d prefer, rather, to rearrange things so that liberals get to run the show. This is a worldview that reduces political players to good guys and bad guys, one that says what’s wrong with how the world works is who’s in charge. That’s a story that people like to tell about America and its systems of power, but one that buckles under the weight of actual American history.

The Most Fascinating Guest on 'The Rehearsal,' Who Crashed a Scion TC at 100 MPH, Did Not Enjoy His Time on the Show

Some basic facts about Stone are, he says, accurately portrayed in the episode. Stone says that he is a strong believer in Christ—a belief that has only grown with the multiple vehicular accidents he’s gotten into. On top of crashing his Scion tC at 100 mph, something he repeatedly references in the show, he also had a brush with death when he was involved in an ATV accident.

“I even saw the white light,” he said. “I was ascending, going to heaven. And God pulled me out.”
